Christopher Okpoti Adjei, a 16-year-old junior high school student in Ghana has become the youngest referee in the country following an appointment from the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

According to reports by the Ghanafa.org and Ghanaweb.com, the teenager was selected as part of an initiative by the GFA to train young referees in the country.

A report dated August 26, 2020, on the GFA's website mentions that the association had launched the “Catch Them Young Refereeing” programme designed to identify, educate and train young talents between the ages of 13-16 to officiate juvenile matches within their regions.

In an interview, the young teenage boy revealed that he actually started refereeing at the age of 13 and went through a series of oppositions because of his choice.

When asked what was his motivation to venture into such a career at his young age, Adjei said:

What motivates me is that I watch Daniel Laryea’s and I say this referee is very good and brilliant, so I want to be like him, so everyday morning when I wake up and pray, I tell God to let me reach where Daniel Laryea has reached.

Christopher further mentioned that he dreams of taking his FIFA badge at the age of 25 years and become the first Ghanaian referee to handle a World Cup final.
