Lionel Messi will not change his mind about leaving Barcelona this summer after handing a transfer request, according to presidential candidate Toni Freixa.

There have been controversies surrounding Messi's decision after his annoucement but the Freixa believes it will do little or nothing to stop the Argentine.

"As I have heard from several sides, the decision the player has come to is one that has matured over several years and is irrevocable," he told Goal. "I don't believe that there is any going back.

"Messi is a player who strives for maximum success. He alone cannot achieve maximum success, he needs a team for that. He does not have one.

"Since the treble in 2015, Champions League success is missing. That is what concerns him. His decision is due to the negative sporting development of the team in recent years."

Freixa is among the candidates looking to take over from Josep Maria Bartomeu in next year's elections beleives Messi's potential reunion with pep Guardiola at Man City is the best decision made by forward.

According Cadena Se,City will offer Messi an initial two-year contract, with the club's director of football, Txiki Begiristain, already in Spain to finalize the deal.

"I think a move to Man City is likely.

"With Pep, Messi experienced his most brilliant years in Barcelona. It would only be logical if both of them worked together again."

Meanwhile, YEN.com.gh had earlier reported that Lionel Messi's departure from Barcelona could lead the outgoing Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu to jail or a heavy fine, according to reports from Spain.

The club are ready not to let go of the 33-year-old unless his £632million release clause is met and this is against the captain's wish who wants to leave as a free agent.

Messi has threatened a legal action against the club and Bartomeu is standing in the way of the Argentine star because who could face a jail term, according to Spanish journalist Guillem Balagu.
