A pregnant teacher in Brasil has unfortunately died of the novel coronavirus after she was infected with the deadly disease at a surprise baby shower.

Camila Graciano, 31, who had stayed at home and avoided public places to protect herself from the virus, came into contact with a positive patient when her colleagues threw her a surprise baby shower in Anapolis.

According to reports by Brasilian news site Globo, the infected guest was asymptomatic during the visit and unknowingly spread the virus to other attendants.

“Unfortunately, my sister was one of the people who were infected,” the deceased's brother, Daniel Ambrosio, told the outlet, according to news station KRON.

The 31-year-old who was just a month away from delivering her bundle of joy, was rushed to hospital three days after the party where she gave birth via emergency cesarean section.

She delivered a beautiful baby girl who was healthy but her virus-stricken mom remained hospitalised.

“After the birth, my sister showed significant improvement. The doctors even sent us a message saying, ‘Listen, have faith, because her lungs are improving, the heartbeat is improving (and) her blood pressure is improving," said Ambrosio.

Graciano's health however, soon worsened and she was pronounced dead on Saturday, August, 22.

As of Thursday, September 3, morning, Brasil had confirmed over four million cases of COVID-19 with at least 124,000 deaths.

Globally, over 26 million have been infected with the respiratory illness with the death toll standing at 867,000.

Over 18 million people had however, recovered from the virus according to coronavirus tracker Worldometers.
