Nurses, other health workers threaten strike over poor conditions of service

The president of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), Mrs Perpetual Ofori Ampofo, has called on its members to withdraw their services from 8:00AM, Monday, September 21, 2020.
According to her, the decision to embark on a strike action stems from the poor conditions of service suffered by members of the GRNMA.
The association is, however, calling on the government respond to them and improve their conditions of service before Monday.

Speaking at a news conference, monitored by YEN.com.gh on TV3 Thursday, September 17, 2020, Mrs Ofori Ampofoh lamented how their employer (government) was not forthcoming with the provision of personal protective equipment(PPEs), non-payment of some allowances and other essential benefits.
She, however, called on the general public to seek medical attention from other health facilities.
A report filed by Graphiconline, indicated that a letter dated September 9, 2020 was served to all stakeholders informing them about the status of the negotiation and the possible actions of the GRNMA and its allied associations.
A subsequent statement issued on Thursday, September 17, 2020, by the association said the government’s stance during negotiations fell foul of Act 651 of the Labour Law which deals with issues of good faith for stakeholders, which the association appears to have an issue with.

Still on health, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has revealed that his government would construct and equip 12 40-bed hospitals, with staff accommodation facilities for hospital workers, across the country.
This project, according to the president, would be done with €71.5 million, which has been secured.
Speaking at a sod-cutting ceremony of the Mim Community Hospital as reported by peacefmonline, President Akufo-Addo explained that the reason why these hospitals were being constructed was to grant accessible health coverage to all Ghanaians.
