Western Togoland: Unidentified men attack police stations and steal weapons

- Two police stations have been attacked by unidentified men in the Volta Region

- The men are believed to be members of secessionist group, Western Togoland

The secessionist group, Western Togoland, appears to be on a rampage and are not in anyway looking back with regard to their bid to ensure that they are independent from Ghana.

Armed men, believed to be members of the Western Togoland secession group, have reportedly launched attacks on the Aveyime and Mepe police stations in the North Tongu District of the Volta Region.

According to news report filed by JoyNews, in the early hours of Friday, September 25, 2020, a group of armed men simultaneously took over both police stations, overpowered the police officers and stole all their weapons from their armoury.

An eyewitness to the whole event said the police officers on duty were stripped naked and locked in the cells meant for criminals; those behind the act then broke into the armoury to steal the weapons.

At Mepe, according to the report, after hoisting a Western Togoland flag, the men joined the rest of their colleagues at the Aveyime Police Station, where they seized two police vehicles, and injured an officer in the process.

The group, numbering about 50, reportedly made of locals from Mepe, Aveyime, Battor, and surrounding communities, were later seen chanting war songs and congratulating themselves for successful operations.

They, however, absconded from the station before daylight to avoid being identified by law enforcement officers.

YEN.com.gh earlier reported that, people suspected to be pushing for split of the Volta Region from Ghana, have allegedly blocked the road into the region.

This blockage left scores of commuters stranded on the Accra-Sogakope road.

The road was blocked with heaps of sand and a bonfire at Mepe on the Accra-Sogakope road.

The people involved in the act could be seen adorned in matching and customised black shirts, accompanied with red head and wrist bands.
