The Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has revealed that the government has installed free wireless internet connection popularly known as Wi-Fi in 80% of Senior High Schools across the country.
According to Bawumia, this initiative is intended to help broaden the scope of education, Information, Communication and Technology (ICT), research and knowledge acquisition in SHSs.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosiisen show on Wednesday, September 30, 2020, as reported by Joy News, the vice president revealed that the project is nearing completion than it was estimated.
The initiative was made public by the Vice President early 2020 at a Town Hall Meeting in Kumasi.

“We promised to provide free Wifi to our secondary schools... At least 80% of all our Senior High Schools have now been connected to free Wi-Fi, that is the data we have,” he said.
He noted that the system is being tested before it is approved to be fit for use in October, as mentioned by Minister of Communications, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful.
YEN.com.gh earlier reported that the Deputy Minister of Education in-charge of Basic and Secondary Education, Dr. Yaw Adutwum, revealed that the Ghana Education Service (GES) had been tasked to review their policies on the use of mobile phones and other devices to make room for the president promise.
“GES [Ghana Education Service] has been asked to review their policies and they are going to have to review it [the ban on smart devices]. We are in the 21st century,” he said.
Speaking on CitiFM's Point Blank segment on Eyewitness News, Dr. Adutwum said concerns were not enough to hold back arguments against the use of gadgets with internet access in schools without adult supervision.
According to him, the time is now for society to embrace the positives of technology in schools.
“In the 21st century, you have to leverage technology to improve learning outcomes. It is something that has to happen and ought to happen,” he noted.
