Charges against 60 arrested Western Togoland separatists dropped by the state

- The state has dropped charges against 60 persons arrested in connection with separatists activities.

News reaching YEN.com.gh indicates that the state has withdrawn the charges leveled against 60 persons who were arrested in connection with the separatists activities in the Volta Region.

The 60 persons were discharged by an Accra Circuit Court on Wednesday, October 21, 2020.

No reasons whatsoever were given by state prosecutors as to why the charges leveled against them were dropped.

According to a report filed by Citinewsroom, the state prosecutor, Sylvester Mensah, prayed the Court to grant the State’s application for withdrawal of charges and to discharge the 60 accused persons.

Some of the defence lawyers, however, insisted that the State attributed reasons for its decision.

The lawyers feared that the State had employed a tactic to re-arrest and re-arraign the accused persons the moment they were discharged by the Court.

Members of the Western Togoland secessionist group blocked some major roads leading into the Volta Region .

On September 25, 2020, some men suspected to be members of the Western Togoland secessionist group launched attacks on some some police stations in the Volta Region.

The group, numbering about 50, reportedly made of locals from Mepe, Aveyime, Battor, and surrounding communities, were later seen chanting war songs and congratulating themselves for successful operations.

They, however, absconded from the station before daylight to avoid being identified by law enforcement officers.

At the Aveyime and Mepe police stations, they attacked the officers on duty, broke into the armory and stole all of their weapons

They blocked some major roads that led to the region and burnt tyres causing massive traffic in the region

The accused persons were rounded up from their communities at different times, arrested and brought to Accra for trial last month.

But the following Monday, the group attacked the Ho State Transport Corporation yard and set fire to some buses.
