The 25th edition of the prestigious Ghana Journalist Association (GJA) Awards has been held in Accra.

The awards which came off at the Movenpick Ambassador on Saturday, October 24, 2020.

The night saw Samson Lardy Ayenini, of Multimedia Group's Joy FM and Joy News TV, emerging with the topmost award.

Ayenini, a lawyer and host of the popular Newsfile programme on the Joy FM/TV channels was adjudged the 2019 P.A.V. Ansah Journalist of the Year.

Aside from winning the ultimate award, Ayenini emerged victorious in the Democracy and Peace Building award category.

Speaking at the receipt of his award, emphasised the role of the media in Ghana's democracy while pleading for attacks on physical attacks journalists to stop especially as we go into elections in a few weeks.

A report YEN.com.gh sighted on Citinewsroom.com quoted him as saying:

“As we go into election 2020, I want to repeat today, take your evil eyes and hands off journalists. Some journalists spend sleepless nights to inform the public. Please cooperate with journalists and don’t attack them.”
“Too many journalists have been attacked and I have had the privilege of standing in for some of them. Even if they do wrong or conduct themselves criminally, please do what is done in a democracy, call for their arrest. no one has the right to lay their hands on them,” he emphasised.

Apart from Ayenini, Myjoyonline.com reports that a total of 64 journalists and media houses were awarded at the 25th Ghana Journalists’ Association (GJA) Awards. (See the full list here.)
