Well deserved: Teenage girl who filmed George Floyd's death to be awarded

A 17-year-old girl who recorded the brutal killing of George Floyd that led to a worldwide movement against police brutality will be awarded for her bravery.

PEN America announced on Tuesday, October 27, it will be honouring Darnella Frazier with the annual PEN/Benenson Courage Award.

The organisations CEO Suzanne Nossel tweeted that had it not been for her presence of mind and readiness to risk her own safety, the truth behind Floyd's death would not have been known.

"With nothing more than a cell phone and sheer guts, Darnella changed the course of history in this country," wrote Nossel.

"Sparking a bold movement demanding an end to systemic anti-Black racism and violence at the hands of police," she added.

A civil rights attorney representing Floyd's family, Ben Crump, also praised Darnella as well saying she showed tremendous courage and the award was well-deserved.

Darnella will share the award with Marie Yovanovitch the ex-US ambassador to Ukraine who helped expose President Donald Trump's efforts to get Ukraine to investigate Joe Biden.

The 17-year-old girl went through a lot of backlash after releasing the video with the majority of internet users asking why she did not do anything else other than just recording.

Her family had to seek therapy for the teenager to help her cope with emotional trauma.

Since the killing of Floyd in Minneapolis in May 2020, millions of Americans marched in cities, big and small, to protests racial violence and police brutality.

The demonstrations were largely nonviolent yet in many jurisdictions, law enforcement responded with force.

Tens of thousands of demonstrators, activists and Black Lives Matter (BLM) supporters were arrested.
