US Election: History as Biden breaks Obama's popular vote record, counting ongoing

United States Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden has made history by collecting more votes than his former boss Barack Obama did in 2008, setting a new record for most popular votes garnered in the process.

As of Wednesday, November 4, night, the 77-yearr-old had received more than 71 million votes with tallying still ongoing and as such, he exceeded the 69.4 million votes collected by Obama who held the previous record.

High voter turnout

According to a report by the New York Post, the US Election was characterised by one of the highest turnouts ever in history.

“This was an extraordinary election that appears to have spurred one of the highest turnouts in a century. That means that both candidates are going to receive larger vote totals than they would have in the past," Rogers Smith, a professor of political science at the University of Pennsylvania said.

When compared to Obama however, who served as the 44th US president for two terms, Biden received less votes in terms of percentage (22%) whereas Obama received 23%.

Obama also drew a higher percentage of the country’s registered voters (48%) to the former vice president's 45%.

Biden is on course to winning the tight race to White House after he narrowly defeated Trump in Michigan and Wisconsin, two states that the later won in 2016.

Trump to challenge results

As was earlier reported by YEN.com.gh, the head of state of the most powerful nation in the world vowed to challenge the results in the Supreme Court claiming there was "fraud".

Speaking at the White House on Wednesday, November 4, morning, Trump asked his supporters to prepare for celebrations as he had "won" in battleground swing states despite Biden taking a lead.

"This is a fraud on the American public. As far as I’m concerned, we already have won," he said before adding: "We' will be going to the US Supreme Court. We want all voting to stop. We don’t want them to find any ballots at 4 am in the morning and add them to the list," Trump said.
