President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has formerly announced the death of former president Jerry John Rawlings.

In a statement sighted of Facebook he directed that all national flags for the next seven days must fly at half-mast in all parts of the country.

Akufo-Addo also announced that the government would be working closely with the family of the former president on a befitting state burial.

Flying a flag at half-staff or half-mast is a sign for grief and mourning. It is flown following the death of certain government officials, in times of national distress, on various holidays, and at any other time it is instructed by the president or government.

The president also announced seven days of national mourning from Friday, November 13, 2020 to Friday November 20, 2020.

President Akufo-Addo also announced that in honour of the first president of the fourth republic, he together with vice-president Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia have suspended their campaign activities.

Akufo-Addo also announced that the government would be working closely with the family of the former president on a befitting state burial.

YEN.com.gh earlier reported that former president Jerry John Rawlings has died.

According to a report sighted by YEN.com.gh on Graphic.com.gh, Rawlings died at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital after suffering a certain ailment.

He was said to have been on admission at the hospital for about a week now for an undisclosed illness and passed on in the early hours of Thursday, November 12, 2020.

The former president died at age 73, two weeks after he buried his mother in October. The mother, Madam Victoria Agbotui, died aged 101.

Rawlings initially came to power in Ghana as a flight lieutenant of the Ghana Air Force following a coup d’état in 1979.

In 1992, Rawlings resigned from the military and founded the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and became the first President of the Fourth Republic.
