The presidential candidate of the National Democratic Party (NDP), Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings has not withdrawn from the December 7, 2020, presidential elections.

According to a report by the state-owned graphic.com.gh, the former First Lady had not communicated to the Electoral Commission (EC) her withdrawal from the presidential race contrary to reports.

Sources within the commission told the outlet that they had not received any communication from the wife of the late former President Jerry John Rawlings to suggest that she was withdrawing from the election.

Konadu founded the NDP in 2012 as a breakaway from the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the party her late husband founded in 1992. Rawlings led the NDC from 1993 to 2001.

In 2016, she had her first appearance on Ghana’s ballot paper. She was disgracefully disqualified from contesting in the 2012 presidential polls.

Many are expecting the former First Lady to bow out of the 2020 presidential election in honour of her late husband, Ghana’s first Fourth Republican president.

Rawlings died on Thursday, November 12, 2020, at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital after a short illness.

Konadu took backstage from the party’s campaign team since the death of Rawlings, raising concerns about the fortunes of the NDP in the election.

But, Alhaji Mohammed Frimpong, the party’s general secretary, expressed optimism Konadu’s absence will not affect the party.

“Our teams are crisscrossing the country to motivate all our parliamentary candidates,” he was quoted as saying on Monday, November 23, 2020. “Our presidential candidate will not need physical presence anywhere to be known, given the unfortunate event,” he added.
