The chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Mensa, has strongly pushed back at allegations that the commission plans to rig the upcoming 2020 general elections for the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has on several occasions accused the former head of the Institute of Economic Affair (IEA) of trying to skew the elections in favour of the NPP and President Akufo-Addo.

Addressing the allegations on Tuesday, November 24, 2020, at a training programme organised for journalists ahead of the polls by the Ghana Journalist Association (GJA), Mensa, said: “To the question of being in bed with the government, I'm sure I would have two children by now, because it’s been two years...”

She said the commission is focused on organising free, fair, and transparent polls come Monday, December 7, 2020, and that “even if the president was your uncle or your father, there’s nothing, absolutely nothing you can do.”

Mensa was nominated as the EC’s chairperson following the sacking of Charlotte Osei. She took her oath of office in August 2018 alongside three other persons—two deputies and a commission member.

Mensah is a lawyer by profession. Her wealth of knowledge holds her in a good position as a leader in Ghana's governance and democratic issues.

She has carved a niche for herself in the field of policy research and advocacy and the development of policy alternatives.

Meanwhile, the commission says it is 95 percent prepared for the presidential and parliamentary elections.
