Asantehene's Atenehene urges political parties to ensure peaceful election

As the December 7 general elections gets nearer, opinion leaders, and all responsible stakeholders are purposefully preaching peace.

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II's Atenehene, Nana Boakye Yiadom Atonsa II has stressed the need for members of political parties to comport themselves to ensure peaceful and violent free elections.

Speaking to YEN.com.gh's King Amoah in an exclusive interview, Nana Atonsa II pointed out that power struggle through elections does not give mandate to the followers of political parties to indulged in the acts that could disrupt the peace of the country.

According to him, democracy is an effective way of opinion sharing for good governance and has no link with violent behavior.

He added that the 2020 general elections is not the only poll the nation is going to witness, as previous ones have been held successfully without question marks.

Nana Atonsa II, underscored the need for political parties to explain their manifesto policies into details to increase their chances of winning the 2020 polls.

He said the act of insulting or attacking political opponents must be avoided since it could spark off anger to breach the democratic principles of the country.

Otumfuo's Atenehene suggested for government attention, the institutionalization and legalization of National Policy Schedule where traditional authorities could be given the chance to become part of law makers to enhance good governance in the society, noting that, though the constitution is in existence, political parties preferred using their manifestos to rule the country when power is transferred to them.

He added that if the National Policy Schedule is enforced and legalized as a main policy to be used for formulating policies in Ghana, it will go a long way to benefit the populates to enhance the rapid socio - economic development in the country.

Nana Atonsa II however called on the Electoral Commission to stay neutral and conduct transparent, free and fair elections that would enhance the acceptance of the elections by the political parties to avoid confusion in the society.

Meanwhile, the electoral fortunes of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Volta region has just received a massive setback.

It follows the defection of over a hundred members of the party in the Keta constituency of the region to join the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The group severed their relationship with the NDC on Monday, November 23, 2020.
