Election 2020: Ghanaians head to the polls today

Ghanaian voters head to the polls today [Monday], December 7, 2020, to cast their ballots to elect a president and 275 legislators to represent them in parliament.

Over 17 million voters are expected to take part in the December 7 elections, having endured a challenging year due to the raging coronavirus pandemic.

The leading front runners in the 2020 polls are incumbent President Nana Akufo-Addo, representing the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), and the presidential candidate of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama.

Ten other candidates are also in the race to be elected as president to manage the affairs of the country, with 275 single-member seats in parliament up for election as well.

Polls will open from 7 am to 5 pm in 38,622 polling stations in all the 275 constituencies nationwide.

The 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections will go down in Ghana's electoral history as the biggest slate of candidates since the country began democracy.

A candidate must secure 50 percent plus one eligible vote in the presidential race to clinch victory to govern as the eighth president of the Fourth Republic for the next four years.

The new president will officially be sworn into office on January 7, 2021, at an inaugural ceremony.

NPP claims victory in 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections

The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has claimed that is leading in the 2020 general elections.

At a press conference held in Accra, the party said it collation of election results from across the country show that the party will retain their majority in parliament.

John Boadu, the NPP general secretary, who led the press conference, made the claim as he rejected an earlier assertion by National Democratic Congress (NDC) that the opposition party had flipped many parliamentary seats and was on course to win the majority in the house.

The NPP also stated that their candidate, President Akufo-Addo, was leading the presidential race by 52.72% to Mahama's 45.93%, with 87% of the votes counted.

The 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections have ended at 5 pm nationwide.

Polls opened at 7 am on Monday, December 7, 2020, for eligible voters to cast their ballots for their preferred candidates in the tightly-contested race.

Counting has begun in 38,622 polling stations in all the 275 constituencies nationwide.

Man on sick bed votes in tightly-contested race

Charles Asante Yeboah, an ill-bedridden hospital patient, has moved heaven and earth to be able to exercise his franchise in the ongoing 2020 general election.

According to reports sighted by YEN.com.gh on Kasapafmonline, the man has been on admission at the International Maritime Hospital in Tema.

He, however, was not going to allow his present state to stop him from voting and got his handlers to get him to his polling station.

Mahama's bodyguard votes amid claims his name was not in register

Tahiru Bombi Bakari, the bodyguard of former president John Dramani Mahama, has voted, the Electoral Commission (EC) has confirmed.

He cast his vote at the District Office Polling Station in Boli-Bamboi Constituency.

This was after the former president and presidential candidate of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, made the assertion that his bodyguard was not in the voters' register and had not voted.

The Ghanaian actress, Tracey Boakye, has taken part in the ongoing voting exercise and has shared a photo from the polling station where she voted.

She indicated in the caption that came with the photo that she voted peacefully without any issues at all.

EC assures public of smooth election process nationwide

The Electoral Commission (EC) has assured the general public that voting is ongoing smoothly in all 38,622 polling stations nationwide.

In a post on social media, the commission said swift action is being taken to resolve any hiccups that will slow down the process.

EC officials trapping electorates to vote for NPP in Ashanti region - NDC

Some officials of the Electoral Commission in the Ashanti Region are reportedly asking electorates to vote for the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) alleged on Monday, December 7, 2020, that personnel of the commission in the Adansi Asokwa and other constituencies were trapping voters to vote for the NPP.

Citing the Ashanti regional secretary of the NDC, Kwame Zu, Starrfm.com.gh reported that some voters in Ejisu were also handed already thumb printed ballot papers “to drop in the ballot boxes.”

The presidential candidate of the National Democratic Party (NDP), Nana Konadu Agyemang-Rawlings, has cast her vote in the 2020 elections.

The former first lady voted at the Ridge Church School Polling Station A in the Klottey Korle Constituency at 11:00 am.

Speaking after voting, Nana Konadu, who was clad in black and still mourning her late husband, former president Jerry John Rawlings, praised the Electoral Commission (EC).

The multiple award-winning Ghanaian singer, Andrews Samini, known by the stage name Samini, has been seen in the latest photos casting his vote in the December 7 election.

We have identified & sacked officials tampering with ballot papers - EC confirms

The Electoral Commission (EC) has confirmed reports of some officials tampering with the ballot papers before handing over to the electorate for voting.

In an update issued by the EC titled, "alleged cases of tampering with presidential ballot papers", it is indicated the suspected officials have been identified and fired.

The press release also confirmed rumours that the incident that saw voters being handed incomplete ballot boxes took place at Awutu Senya West and Bawku Central Constituencies.

Klottey Korle: NDC caught security officer voting multiple times

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Greater Accra region has expressed dismay over the ability of a security officer to engage in multiple voting at the Klottey Korle Constituency.

According to the party’s regional chairman, Ade Coker, the said personnel voted in the Special Voting exercise held on Tuesday, December 1, 2020.

At least 109,557 persons took part in that exercise held at 311 centres across the country.

Speaking to Accra-based Class FM on Monday, December 7, 2020, Coker said: “So, we came here for us to fill an objection form.”

Mahama has been declared winner - Festish priest who prophcised Akufo-Addo’s victory

A fetish priest in the Eastern Region, Great Nana Osoroba, who accurately predicted Akufo-Addo’s victory in 2016, has disclosed that the NDC has been declared the winner of the 2020 election, spiritually.

He said the case may be different in the physical realm if the NDC fails to adhere to a spiritual direction he has given them.

Nana said something is hindering the NDC from grabbing power from the NPP.

He, however, said things could change if the party executives obey his directives.

Minority Chief whip Muntaka Mubarak allows 6-year-old daughter to thumbprint his ballots

The Member of Parliament (MP) for the Asawase Constituency, Alhaji Muntaka Mubarak, has allowed his six-year-old daughter to thumbprint his ballots in the ongoing general election.

''If you see her, she's only six years old, she doesn't even understand what's going on,'' the minority chief whip told Accra-based Citi FM after casting his ballots

“I raised her thumb and did the thumb printing; it was virtually me doing it,” he added.

Man in his 20s arrested for taking photos of his ballot paper

A gentleman in his 20s has been arrested by officials from the Ghana Police Service after casting his vote in the Western Region.

According to a report on Citi TV monitored by YEN.com.gh, the incident occurred at the Shama Police Station in the early hours of the voting process.

While everyone has the right to vote, it is such a sacred legal process that must be kept confidential to only the individual casting their ballot, hence the arrest.

Photo drops as Lordina Mahama casts her vote with her 4 children

The former first lady and wife of former president John Dramani Mahama, Lordina, has cast her vote in Monday’s polls.

In a photo sighted by YEN.com.gh, she voted together with four of her sons at the La Dadekotopon Constituency in the Greater Accra Region.

They were all spotted clad in white as they went to cast their votes at about 11:15 am at the Next Page polling station at Tse-Addo.

Confusion rocks Mahama’s polling station and process in Bole Bamboi

Some sort of mixup has rocked the election process in Bole Bamboi where ex-president John Dramani Mahama cast his vote today, Monday, December 7, 2020.

There was some slight issue at Mahama's polling center in Bole Bamboi where the name of one of the bodyguards of former president Mahama was missing from the voters' register.

The issue happened at the same time when Mahama arrived at the polling station and was cleared to exercise his franchise.

A photo going viral on social media has captured the ballot paper of a gentleman who decided to vote for all the presidential candidates.

The image sighted by YEN.com.gh on the personal Twitter handle of Bengazy with the handle, @yawjunior_ shows that the gentleman simply started right from the top to the very bottom.

Ghanaians have descended heavily on the man who perpetrated the act including Bengazy who wondered why any sound citizen would vote in such a manner.

Akufo-Addo and Rebecca vote at Kyebi; optimistic of victory

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has cast his vote in the 2020 elections in the Abuakwa South constituency of the Eastern region.

A pregnant woman in labour has decided to go exercise her franchise before yielding to nature to give birth.

She stormed the Kofidja polling station in the wee hours of Monday to cast her vote before going to push out her child.

BVD machine 'fails' to capture fingerprint of aged woman; facial recognition used

An old lady at the Catholic Social Centre polling station in Zuarugu of the Bolgatanga East Constituency in the Upper East Region has been facially verified to vote.

According to a report sighted by YEN.com.gh on 3 News, the information had it that the fingers of the lady could not be identified by the Biometric Verification Device (BVD) when she turned up to vote.

As a result, she was verified using the facial recognition technology which EC officials took with them to all the polling stations.

Dumelo demands voting at GIMPA polling station be halted over lack of indelible ink
