Ghanaian rapper Sarkodie has revealed his wish to rap with France-based Congolese Star GIMS.
Sarkodie made this fascinating revelation to French Ambassador and “Touch of France” TV show host H.E. Anne-Sophie Avé during an exclusive interview.
When rapping to non-Twi speaking audiences, “Obidi Pon Bidi” prefers to privilege “good music, rhythm and good melody” in his own words. It is on the back of this approach that the Youssou N’Dour admirer has singled out GIMS -- formerly known as Maitre Gims -- as the French-based vocalist with whom he’d love to collaborate.
“I heard his music whilst I was there [in Paris],” Sarkodie reminisced when talking to H.E. Anne-Sophie Avé, France’s Ambassador to Ghana and host of TV program “Touch of France”.
“It was being played a lot. His voice is incredible. If I get that and I rap, I think that would be great!”
On the show, “The Highest” described rapping in Twi as a sign of being “a true artist” and rapping in English as a business strategy. Eventually, if Sarkodie fulfills his wish of working with GIMS, anticipation towards the release of the track might mainly be based upon one main question: what language would Sarkodie rap in?
This could present an opportunity for the Twi language to break barriers just as global hit “Jerusalema” has done through its Zulu-language lyrics. Conversely, and in view of Sarkodie’s Francophone fan base across Africa, the rapper may surprise the public by rapping a few lines in French.
On the other hand, with such a collaboration, GIMS may finally be able to find a new public in Africa’s most peaceful and vibrant Anglophone country, Ghana. For now, the Kinshasa-born global entertainment icon, whose net worth is estimated to be no less than 16 million euros with annual gains of 3.1 million euros, would be best known among Ghanaian night club goers for one of his uncountable international hits, "Sapés comme jamais", which boasts a massive 483,000,000 Youtube views and counting since its release in 2015.
Whatever comes out of a GIMS featuring Sarkodie hit is sure to break the charts and prove once again that music is a universal language.
Meanwhile, it would not be the first time that Sarkodie teams up with a French-speaking artist. In 2019, he rapped with Martinique’s Kalash for BET’s Best International flow cypher. Four years prior, he did a duet titled “"Ma Paki Mé Niéma" with French rapper Gradur.
