Four hundred and twenty-four new lawyers have been called to the Bar in Ghana, certifying the beginning of their legal profession.

The newly trained attorneys were called to the Bar at the 57th anniversary organised by the General Legal Council (GLC) in Accra.

The council was set up in 1960 by an Act to consolidate and amend the law relating to the Legal Profession in Ghana. The Legal Profession Act, 1960 (Act 32).

The scope of the Legal Profession Act includes organisation of legal education and upholding standards of professional conduct and discipline.

The new lawyers successfully passed their professional law examination organised by the Ghana School of Law.

The event was attended by Chief Justice Kwasi Anin Yeboah.

The Justice and Attorney General Minister, Gloria Afua Akuffo, and Anthony Forson Jnr, the national president of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) were also in attendance.

Gyan Emmanuel Yeboah won the John Mensah Sarbah Memorial prize.

In a separate development, the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has said no amount of “whining” can change President Nana Akufo-Addo’s victory in the just-ended general election.

The chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Mensa, declared Akufo-Addo the winner of the presidential race in the Monday, December 7, 2020, election.

Mahama rejected the outcome as fundamentally flawed. He said the declaration was a clear violation of the law because the commission did not follow the rules set out to conduct the elections.

The general secretary of the NPP, John Boadu, said the president emphatically won the election. The votes difference between the two candidates is 517, 231 with four percentage points, one of the highest since 1996.

According to Boadu, Ghanaians are at a loss as to how a vote difference of 517,231 can be deemed contentious.
