Asankragwa Market on fire; goods worth 1000s of cedis lost

Fire outbreak at the Asankragwa Main Market in the Amenfi West Municipality of the Western Region has razed down four stalls and other properties worth thousands of cedis on Friday night.
The disaster, according to eyewitnesses, was brought under control after two hours by residents.
Some of the eyewitnesses who have been speaking to journalists said the Ghana Fire Service in the Municipality looked on helpless as the fire razed down the stores as a result of a broken-down fire tender for the past six months.

District Officer grade 1 of the Ghana Fire Service in the municipality, Justice Agyee, confirming their inability to bring the fire under control said there was nothing his outfit could do without a fire tender.
So far, the cause of the fire is not immediately known. The month of December has recorded major market fires across the country with the latest being that of the Kantamanto Market fire which ravaged thousands of shops.
The vice president of Ghana, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has visited the scene of the fire outbreak which destroyed parts of Kantamanto Market in Accra.

In a number of photos sighted by YEN.com.gh on the Facebook page of the vice president, he was spotted inspecting the level of damage the fire had caused.
Dr. Bawumia was seen in the company of other government officials as they went on rounds to talk to some of the victims of the December 15, 2020, fire outbreak.
Reports also went on to add that the inferno started late in the night of December 15, 2020, and remained unquenched until the early hours of December 16, 2020.
After posting the photos, Dr. Bawumia indicated that the government was going to provide some form of relief to the victims of the inferno.
His post read:
"I paid a visit to victims of the Kantamanto market fire outbreak today, December 16, 2020, to inspect the extent of damage caused and also condole with them.
I indicated that Government will provide the needed help to mitigate the loss and also urged all to put in place the precautionary measures to minimize such unfortunate occurrences."
Affected traders of the disaster are counting their losses especially when the majority of them have no insurance policy to fall on in these troubling times.
Fire accidents are becoming rife across market centers in the country. Many say the buck stops at Insurance companies who often decide not to insure market centers.
