Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has urged former President, John Dramani Mahama, to take a cue from President Akufo-Addo’s handling of his 2008 electoral defeat.

Then-candidate Akufo-Addo lost the presidential race by 40, 000 votes, and less than one percentage point.

“…But, we prioritised the peace and sanctity of our democracy first and conceded,” the vice president stated during the New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Thanksgiving Service on Sunday, December 27, 2020.

He added: “I am very much convinced that the Lord who granted us the will power to prioritise national cohesion, peace, and tranquillity over personal gratification is capable and will do the same today,” in reference to Mahama’s refusal to concede defeat in the 2020 polls.

Mahama rejected the outcome as fundamentally flawed with a call for an independent audit of the election figures.

The audit will be crucial in reducing the tensions over the declared results. Already, the country has since the declaration of the results seen a series of chaotic demonstrations organised by supporters of the NDC nationwide.

In other political news on YEN.com.gh, the presidential candidate of the Great Consolidated Popular Party (GCPP), Dr. Henry Lartey, says Mahama’s decision to challenge the outcome of the 2020 polls in court will be an exercise in futility.

According to the GCPP leader, National Democratic Congress (NDC’s) flagbearer lost cleanly the presidential race to the incumbent, President Akufo-Addo.

“You’ve lost the election, he shouldn’t go to court; it’s a waste of money,” Lartey who doubles as the Secretary-General for the West African Association of Political Parties was quoted as saying by Starr News.

He believed that Mahama is being pressurised by some elements in the NDC to continuously reject the outcome of the elections.

Meanwhile, President Akufo-Addo promised to unite the country towards sustainable development.

Speaking at the NPP’s National Thanksgiving Service, he told the 6.2 million who did not vote for him that “I will have their interest at heart and in mind in all that I do.”
