John Peter Amewu’s case: Tsatsu Tsikata demands Justice Clemence Honyenugah recuses himself

- Tsatsu Tsikata has asked Justice Clemence Honyenugah to recuse himself from the case

- According to the veteran legal luminary, the judge had a strong personal bond with Amewu

- But, the judge says he is going nowhere

The much-anticipated legal arguments on the swearing-in or otherwise of the Member of Parliament (MP-elect) for Hohoe, John Peter Amewu, have begun.

Amewu’s eligibility to be sworn in as a member of Ghana’s Parliament is in limbo following an injunction placed on him by a High Court in Ho.

The Attorney-General (AG) dragged the court to the Supreme Court, asking it to quash the injunction as well as halt it from hearing the substantive case brought against Amewu and the Electoral Commission (EC).

Information reaching YEN.com.gh suggests that when the case was called, the lawyer for the petitioners, Tsatsu Tsikata, demanded Justice Clemence Honyenugah to recuse himself.

Honyenugah is part of the five-member panel presided by Justice Yaw Appau to hear the arguments. The rest are; Justice Samuel Marful-Sau, Justice Gertrude Torkunor, and Justice Amadu Tanko.

According to Tsikata, Honyenugah has a “strong personal relationship,” with Amewu, who is also Ghana’s Energy Minister, Starr FM reported.

Honyenugah, however, refused to rescue himself, arguing that he has no personal relationship with Amewu, compelling Tsikata to formerly move an objection to his existence on the panel.

Meanwhile, An Accra Circuit Court has charged the minority leader in Parliament, Haruna Iddrisu, with unlawful assembly for marching to the headquarters of the Electoral Commission (EC).

Iddrisu was charged alongside 19 other National Democratic Congress (NDC) Members of Parliament (MPs).

Iddrisu on Tuesday, December 22, 2020, led his colleagues to petition the chairperson of the EC, Jean Mensa over the parliamentary results of Techimman South seat which was called for the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Barred from going beyond a barricade around the Ridge Roundabout, Iddrisu led the opposition MPs to break through the barricade in defiance leading to a serious brawl with security officers manning the EC premises.
