Haruna Iddrisu has expressed optimism he will be the Majority Leader in the eighth parliament.

His remarks come ahead of the dissolution of the seventh parliament later today, Wednesday, January 6, 2021.

According to the Tamale South lawmaker, NDC won both the Techiman South and the Sefwi seats contrary to the results declared by the Electoral Commission (EC).

“I am now an aspiring Majority Leader with Techiman South and the Sefwi to be secured...we will form a majority,” Iddrisu told Accra-based Citi FM.

Meanwhile, an Accra Circuit Court charged Iddrisu alongside 19 other NDC legislators with unlawful gathering when they marched to the headquarters of the EC.

On Tuesday, December 22, 2020, he led his colleagues to petition the chairperson of the EC, Jean Mensa over the parliamentary results of Techimman South seat which was called for the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Barred from going beyond a barricade around the Ridge Roundabout, Iddrisu led the opposition MPs to break through the barricade in defiance leading to a serious brawl with security officers manning the EC premises.

In a separate development, President Nana Akufo-Addo and the EC entered a notice of appearance in the election petition case filed by former President John Dramani Mahama at the Supreme Court.

On December 30, 2020, Mahama filed a petition to challenge the outcome of the presidential elections.

According to the results declared by Mensa, Akufo-Addo won. He collected 51.302% of the votes to defeat the flagbearer of the NDC, former President Mahama, who polled 47.359%.
