NDC won't use Bagbin to cause trouble for Akufo-Addo - Sam George assures

The election of former member of Parliament for the Nadowli-Kaleo constituency, Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin as the speaker of the 8th parliament drew a lot of reactions from Ghanaians.

Alban Bagbin beat former speaker of parliament, Professor Mike Aaron Ocquaye to occupy the keenly contested position of the speaker of parliament.

His election was almost marred when Member of Parliament for Tema West, Carlos Ahenkorahsnatched one of their ballot papers during counting.

Alban Bagbin won the seat with 138 votes against 136.

One thing most people were certain about was the fact that since he was from the opposition NDC, Akufo-Addo will have hard time governing the country.

But the MP for Ningo Prampram, Sam Nartey George, has stated that unlike what people are thinking, the NDC has no intention of use Alban Bagbin to frustrate efforts of the Akufo-Addo government.

Sam George said the NDC is willing to do all it takes to protect the democracy of the country and will not do anything to jeopardise it.

Sam George in an interview with CiTiNews said if Bagbin had intentions of holding the President to ransom, he would not have been allowed to appear for Akufo-Addo's swearing-in ceremony.

He added that under no circumstances will the NDC under the leadership of Bagbin bring in partisan bias into the working of parliament.

“We heard the Speaker himself say that he is going to discharge his duties without fear or favour. He never showed bias while Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament," he said.

Meanwhile, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Thursday, January 7, 2021, took the oath of office for a second term after defeating former President John Dramani Mahama in the keenly contested 2020 polls.

Speaking at the ceremony witnessed by heads of state from across Africa and other dignitaries, the president congratulated Alban Bagbin for emerging as the country’s Speaker of Parliament after hours of chaos in the lawmaking chamber.
