The Member of Parliament (MP) for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has backed calls for President Nana Akufo-Addo to maintain Frema Opare as his Chief of Staff.

According to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) lawmaker, Opare performed incredibly well in the president’s first term in office.

Opare became Ghana’s first-ever Chief of Staff when President Akufo-Addo appointed her to that position in January 2017.

Giving reasons why she should be retained on Good Evening Ghana on Tuesday, January 12, 2021, and monitored by YEN.com.gh, Ablakwa described Opare as “very deep and reflective.”

“I like such leaders; leaders who pay attention to details and who think thoroughly,” the former deputy education minister said.

“I won’t be surprised if she makes a good case to carry on to serve in that very high office. She is certainly above ministers,” the North Tongu lawmaker added.

Akufo-Addo was sworn in as Ghana’s president for another four-year term on Thursday, January 7, 2021.

Heads of state from across Africa and dignitaries watch him took the oath of office at a ceremony in Accra.

Akufo-Addo was reelected in the December 2020 polls.

He defeated former President John Dramani Mahama of the NDC in the keenly contested polls garnering 51.302% of the ballots against the latter’s 47.359%.

Mahama rejected the outcome, arguing the verdict was “stolen”, filing a petition at the Supreme Court to challenge the results.

The NDC said it will not acknowledge Akufo-Addo as president.

Addressing a news conference in Accra on Friday, January 8, 2021, the general secretary of the party, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, said: “Let me state without any equivocation that the NDC shall not recognize Akufo-Addo as the President of Ghana until all issues surrounding his flawed elections are satisfactorily resolved.”
