Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu has described the actions of Carlos Ahenkorah during the election of the Speaker as shocking.

According to the Suame legislator, he was still struggling to understand the motive behind Ahenkorah’s despicable conduct during the exercise on Thursday, January 7, 2021.

“I don’t know the spirit that entered him,” the majority leader in the seventh Parliament stated on GHONE TV on Thursday, 14 January 2021.

The Tema West snatched ballot papers during the chaotic election. It followed immediately after he was seen in a discussion with Mensah-Bonsu.

Even though it was unclear what the discussion was about, a section of the Ghanaian populace believed the Suame lawmaker ordered the ballot snatching.

He, however, strongly denied his involvement.

Meanwhile, Ahenkorah said he was forced to snatch the ballot papers because of his love for the NPP and the insatiable desire to grant President Nana Akufo-Addo the peace of mind to govern.

In a statement apologising for his conduct, the former deputy trade minister stated that it was very tough for him to imagine having a speaker from an opposition party.

The NPP in him, he further pointed out could not be controlled. "I must say I am heartbroken and dejected,” he stated.

Alban Bagbin was elected as the Speaker of the eighth Parliament in the contentious election. He polled 138 votes against 136 of the former Speaker Professor Mike Oquaye.

In other news, the Supreme Court granted John Dramani Mahama’s request to have the 2020 election petition telecast live on national television.

The request was granted on Thursday, January 14, 2021, and it is believed to be in the interest of fairness as was done during the 2012 election petition.

Akufo-Addo was sworn in as Ghana’s president for another four-year term on Thursday, January 7, 2021.

He defeated Mahama in the keenly contested 2020 polls; garnering 51.302% of the ballots against the latter’s 47.359%.

Mahama rejected the outcome, arguing the verdict was “stolen”, filing a petition at the Supreme Court to challenge the results.
