China deploys frontline doctors to Ghana as COVID-19 cases surge

China has reportedly deployed a medical team, including frontline doctors to Ghana following the recent rise of COVID-19 cases in the country.
Ghana’s new active cases reached 1,924 as of Sunday, January 17, 2021, with an average of 200 infections daily.

According to a report on dailymailgh.com, the medical team from China, the origin of the deadly contagion, includes 11 doctors in “various specialties.”
They have been trained on COVID-19 prevention and treatment in China, the leader of the team, Zhuang Shaohui, was quoted as saying.
“In particular, three medical specialists of our team have been on the frontline to combat the pandemic in China, whose practical experience, I believe, will also work here in Ghana,” Shaohui told Xinhua News Agency.
He assured that the team will share relevant experiences with “local doctors to help them better understand the route to curb the pandemic.”
The team is from the First Affiliated Hospital of Shantou University Medical College, a designated hospital for COVID-19 patients in China.
Meanwhile, Ghana’s National Security Coordinator, Joshua Kyeremeh, died from the contagion after a short illness at the Ga East Municipal Hospital in the early hours of Monday, January 18, 2021.

According to the pro-government broadcaster, Asaase Radio, he died of kidney complications at the hospital where he was receiving treatment for COVID-19.
A product of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), he was one of President Nana Akufo-Addo’s first appointees during his first term.
President Akufo-Addo warned that the country could face another COVID-19 restriction as authorities battle with the increasing cases of new infections.

“We do not want to go back to the days of partial lockdowns which hurt our economy and way of life.
“…But should that become necessary, and should the number of active cases continue to increase at the current rate, I will have no option than to reimpose these restrictions,” he stated during his recent update on his administration’s handling of the outbreak.
So far 352 COVID-19 related fatalities have been recorded in Ghana.
