The final funeral rites former President Jerry John Rawlings has started today, Sunday, January 24, 2021, with a Requiem Mass.

The pre-burial mass which is currently going on at the Holy Spirit Cathedral (Roman Catholic Church) is being officiated by Most Reverend Charles Plamer Buckle, the Archbishop of Cape Coast and the Vice President of the Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference.

A live video and photos from the pre-burial mass have popped up showing many dignitaries at the ceremony.

In attendance are leading members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the political party Rawlings founded.

The NDC stalwarts spotted at the mass include former President John Dramani Mahama, Speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, Minority Leader in Parliament Haruna Iddrissu, among others.

Clad in black, they looked very pensive and sad as they joined others to mourn their founder.

The late former president passed away on Thursday, November 12, 2020, while on admission at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital. Rawlings had been on admission at the hospital after a short illness.

His passing came just about one month after he buried his 101-year-old mother, Victoria Agbotui, who ha passed away in September.

Per the official funeral programme, the pre-burial mass will be followed by a vigil by the Ghana Armed Forces at Burma Camp later today.

Rawlings will be laid in state at Accra International Conference Centre for three days, starting from Monday, January 25, 2021.

He is expected to be buried on January 27, 2021, in a private burial ceremony.

The 73-year-old left behind his wife, Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings, with whom he had four, children Zanetor, Amina, Yaa Asantewaa, and Kimathi.
