Ghanaians ask why Rawlings' funeral was dominated by Ashanti culture

The late former President Ft Lt Jerry John Rawlings was buried in a grand state funeral that took place on January 27, 2020, at the Black Stars Square in Accra, and was dominated by the Akan culture

Although some other cultures were also on display, it is clear from the pictures sighted by YEN.com.gh that most of the cultural displays were Akan.

This has generated a great debate on social media as the former president whose funeral was being organized is an Anlo man, an Ewe from the Southern part of the Volta Region.

Popular Ghanaian artiste Wanlov put up a post of photos from the burial ceremony and asked whether Rawlings was an Ewe, which generated a debacle among his fans.

Later, OMGVoice also shared on their verified Facebook handle that Felicity Nelson, a gender activist has stated that the funeral of President Jerry John Rawlings should not have been dominated by Akan culture given that he was an Ewe.

Isaack Kyei Andoh, a popular intelligent and opinionated Ghanaian writer also argued in a viral post that Jerry John Rawlings was the greatest son the Ewe people have produced and was supposed to be buried as such.

He further explained that we are from Ghana, but everyone is from somewhere in Ghana and that must be recognised.

"If you are an Asante and happy, you are simply selfish and super tribalistic," he concluded.

Separately, YEN.com.gh reported that a video from Wednesday, July 1, 1992, reveals how Ghana's late former President, Jerry John Rawlings presided over a burial ceremony for Ghana's first president, Kwame Nkrumah.
