COVID-19: Gov't must re-introduce schools under trees to curb spread – Min. designate

The active cases of the novel coronavirus disease has surged from a little over 1,000 cases two weeks ago to 5,358 cases as at Friday, January 29, 2021.

This happened after president Akufo-Addo announced that students at the various levels are to return to school while observing the various safety protocols.

Some schools like the Ghana Institute of Journalism has been closed down because two of its staff contracted the virus.

The Minister-designate for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr Kwaku Afriyie believes the re-introduction of the schools under trees concept will help curtail the spread of COVID-19.

In a report filed by Citinewsroom, he said research has proven that it is better for classes to be conducted in open air spaces than in classrooms in the fight against the virus.

He made this known while speaking on the floor of Parliament.

The Sefwi Wiawso legislator however urged government to consider this proposal to have classes conducted in open places like under trees.

“I’m suggesting that as far as possible, schools should be organized under trees now because the body of empirical evidence suggests that when you stay in non-enclosed spaces, you don’t get infected and that knowledge must be put to good use,” he said.

Meanwhile, in President Akufo-Addo's 23rd address on the management of COVID-19, he disclosed that in the last two weeks, 64 people have died after contracting the virus.

“As of Friday, January 29, 2021, 64 more people have sadly died over the last two weeks bringing the total number of confirmed deaths to 416," he said.
