Six facts about Tsatsu Tsikata, John Mahama’s lawyer in the ongoing election petition

The Supreme Court will tomorrow, Thursday, February 11, 2021, rule on Tsatsu Tsikata’s objection to moves by the lawyer for the first respondent [EC] to have Jean Mensa evade cross-examination.

Justin Amenuvor, the first respondent’s lawyer told the seven-member panel of the Apex Court hearing the case on Monday, February 8, 2021, that he will not call any witness.

Moving to close his case, he argued with the support of the lawyer for the second respondent, Akoto Ampaw that the three witnesses called by the petitioner had not satisfied the burden of proof when they appeared before the court.

Tsikata who is the lead counsel of former President John Mahama, the petitioner in the trial argued vehemently against the move.

He cited several authorities during his fiery arguments, leading to a series of banter with the seven-member panel.

Tsikata’s depiction of shrewdness and absolute grasp of the law during the debate courted him so many admirers on social media.

In this article, YEN.com.gh presents some facts about the former president’s lawyer.

1. He was born in Keta in the southern part of the Volta Region and was raised in Adabraka, a suburb of Accra.

2. He attended Mrs. Sam’s Preparatory School, a school also attended by Ghana’s first President in the fourth republic, Jerry John Rawlings.

3. He won a United Africa Company (UAC) scholarship in 1960 to start his secondary education at the age of nine at the Mfantsipim School where his father and his elder brother, Fui Sokpoli Tsikata also had their secondary education.

4. At the age of 16, he was admitted into the University of Ghana, obtaining an LL.B First Class degree at the age of 18 years.

5. He then won a post-graduate scholarship from the University of Ghana to Oxford University where he obtained first-class honours in Bachelor of Civil Law which is equivalent to a master's degree at other British universities

6. He was lectured by Professor Ofosu Amaah and Dr. Obed Asamoah, a former foreign minister and Attorney General of Ghana.

The NDC flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama petitioned the Supreme Court to order a second round of the December 7, election.

According to him, the votes obtained by NPP’s candidate, President Nana Akufo-Addo, and himself in the December 7, election as declared by the EC Chair were not enough for a candidate to be declared the winner.
