- FDA has announced that Ghana could start importing unpackaged COVID-19 vaccines in bulk

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) of Ghana has announced that Ghana could start importing unpackaged COVID-19 vaccines in bulk.

That according to the FDA, will give local companies the job to fill the vaccines into empty vials.

The Chief Executive Officer at FDA, Delese Mimi Darko, said this is likely to happen within the next six months.

According to her, some local companies are already in the process of getting the needed documentation and clearance to engage in the process.

The FDA CEO said though Ghana may not be well-placed to commence research and clinical trials in the short term, the filling of vials with the vaccine is currently more attainable.

“We may not be at that end of the entire drug development lifecycle but at least we can start with the filling,” Mrs. Darko said.

She said Ghana could have as many as three companies engaged in the filling process.

Meanwhile, YEN.com.gh earlier reported that the Chief Executive Officer of the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), Delese Mimi Darko said Ghana is on the verge of manufacturing her own COVID-19 vaccine.

The country has so far recorded over 80,000 cases of the deadly coronavirus with over 500 deaths

Speaking on Accra-based Asaase FM on Thursday, February 25, 2021, Darko said a committee had been engaged to look at “researching into our own vaccine.”

"And we are looking to fully establish a vaccine manufacturing plant in Ghana,” she added.

Ghana on Wednesday, February 24, 2021, as part of the UN-led COVAX Facility took delivery of some 600,000 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine.
