NPP will break 8 years cycle if Mahama doesn’t lead NDC - NDC MP warns

- The NPP has said it intends to break the eight years power cycle by winning the 2024 elections

- Dr. Clement Apaak said the governing party’s intent will happen if Mahama doesn’t lead the NDC

- Recent electoral poll suggested the NDC will return to power in 2024

The campaign to have former President John Mahama to be the National Democratic Congress’ 2024 presidential candidate is in full swing, with the MP for Builsa South warning that it will be calamitous without the former president on the ticket.

Dr. Clement Apaak said without mincing words that the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) will easily break the eight years power cycle should the NDC present a new candidate for the 2024 elections.

“If Mahama doesn’t lead the party in 2024, the likelihood of the NPP breaking the 8 is very high…We know we’re going to win the election 2024 but as to if a new face is going to lead us to that victory is another thing,” he stated in an interview on Accra-based Starr FM and monitored by YEN.com.gh.

In an earlier YEN.com.gh report, Dr. Apaak refused to accept that the former president lost the 2020 election.

Akufo-Addo defeated former President John Dramani Mahama in the said election to secure another four-year term; collecting 51.302% of the votes cast against the latter’s 47.359%.

The votes difference between the two candidates stood at 517, 231, representing a four percentage point, one of the highest since 1996.

Mahama rejected the outcome of the elections and petitioned the Supreme Court, calling for the annulment of the results and a rerun ordered between him and the president.

According to Mahama, no candidate crossed the 50 plus one mark.

The seven-member panel that sat on the election petition trial, however, said it cannot order a rerun of the 2020 presidential polls because the former president failed to adduce “cogent evidence” to back his claims that there was no winner in the December 7, 2020, presidential elections.

But, Dr. Apaak insists that Mahama won elections but, was denied his mandate by institutions whose leaderships were “handpicked by his competitor to do just that.”

As a result, he believed that the former president deserves a “free pass” to reclaim his stolen mandate.

Meanwhile, a leading member of the NDC said it will be dangerous to present Mahama as the party’s flagbearer.

Stephen Ashitey Adjei said the umbrella fraternity needs a marketable candidate, not one that had been rejected in the 2016 and 2020 elections.

“We must re-examine our product for the electoral market and present a new product,” the Tema East Constituency member told Ghana News Agency.

According to him, the party is starkly divided under the leadership of the former president, saying “no party can win elections in Ghana with a divided front fighting against themselves.”
