Ignore no huge salary increment till 2024 claim - President Akufo-Addo says

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has allayed the fears of public sector workers that the government will not approve of any huge salary increments till 2024.

In response to a concern raised by the Secretary-General of the TUC, Dr Anthony Yaw Baah that the decision could lead to serious agitations on the labour front, Akufo-Addo said the salaries are not frozen.

“Let me reiterate, the salary increments for public sector workers have not been frozen,” Akufo-Addo said.

President Akufo-Addo clarified this claim while addressing the 11th quadrennial delegates congress of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) at Abankro in the Ejisu Municipality.

Akufo-Addo acknowledged that the 2021 Budget Statement contains some difficult actions which he described as necessary causes.

“I understand the concerns being expressed especially with regard to the imposition of new taxes,” he added.

Nana Addo said the time had come for the country to take the next step of action required for the sustained recovery of the economy following the impact of the COVID -19 pandemic.

The President, therefore, appealed to organised labour and to a larger extent, all Ghanaians “to assist the government to rebuild the public’s finances and economy.”

He said there was the need to mobilise additional resources dedicated to the new challenges confronting the country and further appealed to Ghanaians to “bear with government in these unusual and challenging times.”

He said the Ministry of Finance would set up a committee to be made up of members of the social partnership council to look at the establishment of the scheme.

YEN.com.gh earlier reported that all public sector workers are not going to get any form of huge salary increments from 2021, till 2024, the finance ministry has said.

According to the Technical Adviser at the Finance Ministry, Samuel Nii Noi Ashong, there is currently no money available which would be used to increase the wages of workers in the public sector.

He said the impact of COVID-19 on the economy has forced the government into tightening its belts and channeling money to other sectors of the economy.
