Jean Mensa thanks Ghanaians for helping her deliver credible 2020 elections

The chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Mensa, has thanked Ghanaians for their inestimable support before, during, and after the 2020 general elections.

In a tweet sighted by YEN.com.gh, Mensa said the support she had from Ghanaians helped her in organising free, fair, transparent, and “credible” elections.
“I do thank you for following me. With your support, together we can ensure that every election process is Free, Fair, Transparent, Peaceful, and Credible.
“Thank you once again and may God bless our homeland, Ghana, and make our nation great and strong,” the tweet read.
Mensa declared President Akufo-Addo as the winner of the 2020 presidential election.
According to her December 9, 2020, declaration, the president defeated former President John Dramani Mahama in the said election to secure another four-year term; collecting 51.302% of the votes cast against the latter’s 47.359%.
The votes difference between the two candidates stood at 517, 231, representing a four percentage point, one of the highest since 1996.
However, Mahama rejected the outcome of the election and petitioned the Supreme Court, praying it to annul the results declared by the chairperson of the EC.
He argued that there was no winner in the election and that a rerun must be ordered between him and the president.
After 17 days of sittings including five days of pre-trial, the Supreme Court on Day 18 of the hearing dismissed the petition saying it was meritless.
The seven-member panel that heard the petition said it cannot order a rerun of the 2020 presidential polls because the petitioner failed to adduce “cogent evidence” to back his claims that there was no winner in the December 7, 2020, presidential elections.

In other news, the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) is in talks with ECG and NEDCo to roll out a timetable for power outages across the country.
This is because there will be more outages as GRIDCo continues the upgrade of its systems.
The upgrade is expected to be completed in July.
“The contractors are asking for some outages at some particular places so these are the areas where we are looking at a discussion with some key stakeholders like ECG and NEDCo so we can arrive at some appreciable timetable to communicate where there is the need for outages to happen,” Corporate Communications Manager at GRIDCo, Ebenezer Amankwah, stated on Joy News’ PM: Express.
