The former United States vice president Walter Mondale, who served under the reign of ex-president Jimmy Carter, is dead.

Mondale, who lost in the 1984 presidential election to Ronald Reagan, breathed his last on Monday, April 19, aged 93.

The politician's demise was confirmed by his family, which later released a touching farewell message he had written to his staff just two days before his death.

"Well, my time has come. I am eager to rejoin Joan and Eleanor (referring to his late wife Joan, who died in 2014, and daughter Eleanor, who died in 2011 at age 51). Before I go I wanted to let you know how much you mean to me," said Mondale as quoted by US media outlets.

The 44th president of the superpower country, Barack Obama, mourned Mondale as a progressive leader who redefined the role of the vice president.

The current US vice president Kamala Harris said Mondale led an extraordinary life of service during the Korean war, as a senator and vice president.

In a separate story, the Republic of Congo's leading Opposition candidate Guy-Brice Parfait Kolelas succumbed to COVID-19 complications hours after the country held its General Election.

The Opposition chief was reportedly hospitalised on the eve of the elections and died in a medical plane en route to France for specialised treatment.

The news of his demise was announced by Cyr Rodrigue Mayanda, his campaign director, on Sunday, March 22.
