As he turns 102 years old today, April 23, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu has been celebrated by many, especially people belonging to the Islamic faith.

Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has taken to social media to pay homage to the acclaimed Muslim leader.

Taking to his Facebook page, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia wrote ''Happy birthday to the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu.''

The vice-president's post has garnered thousands of reactions and birthday compliments from Ghanaians and his followers alike.

Biography

Born in Accra cow-lane on April 23, 1919, Sheikh Imam Nuhu Sharubutu is the son of Sheikh Imam Nuhu Sharubutu who served as Imam-Raatib (regular or residential Imam) of the Accra Central Mosque from the late 1960s to 1982 before his demise.

His mother, Hajia Ayishatu Abbass, famously known as Mma Tasidi, also contributed greatly to his moral and psychological development by ensuring that he had the proper home upbringing to go side with Islamic Education.

Adult life

In 1974, Sheikh Osmanu accepted to become the deputy Greater Accra Region Chief Imam of Ghana, deputising his cousin, Sheikh Imam Muhammed Mukhtar Abbas who succeeded his father.

He served as the acting Greater Accra Regional Chief Imam until 1993 when he was ceremoniously appointed as the National Chief Imam to head the Muslim communities in Ghana.
