Bring the 2022 AFCON home; time to end the 40-year drought - Akufo-Addo charges Black Stars

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has charged the Black Stars to bring the 2022 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) trophy home to end the nearly 40-year drought.

The president also wants the team to make the semifinals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup to be hosted by Qatar.
“The target is to bring the cup home by winning the AFCON in 2022. We have to go a step further than the second places recorded in 1992, 2010, and 2015 and bring the forty (40) years drought to an end,” he stated during a breakfast meeting with CEOs of corporate Ghana on Monday, April 26, 2021.
“We must also reach at least, the semi-finals of the World Cup in Qatar. Our exploits in South Africa in 2010 where we reached the quarter-finals of the World Cup tells us that once properly prepared, we have the quality and talent to match any of the best teams in the world,” he added.
He, therefore, asked the CEOs to help government raise the targeted amount of $25million for the two tournaments. The government, he said already earmarked $10million.
Still on football, Samuel Kofi Mills, the son of the late former president, John Evan Atta Mills, is set to join one of the biggest football clubs in Ghana, Accra Hearts of Oak.
According to information gathered by YEN.com.gh, Kofi Mills is set to be appointed as the next Hearts of oak managing director.
The Phobians have been without a managing director for many months after Frederick Moore left the club for medical reasons.
The reports also indicate that Kofi Mills has met with the majority shareholder of the club, Togbe Afede XIV to discuss the way forward of the club.
Kofi Mills' move to Hearts of Oak will come as a surprise as many people do not know him to be a football fanatic but he is ready to follow in his late father's footsteps.
Before Atta Mills became vice president under JJ Rawlings' era, he was the majority shareholder of Hearts of Oak. He played a big role as the Accra giants won their first continental glory in 2000 when they won the CAF Champions League.
In other news, Lydia Forson says she is not enthused with the performance of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo one bit.
The award-winning screen goddess in the latest tweet sighted by YEN.com.gh expressed serious concerns with the Akufo-Addo’s administration mediocre performance since taking over in 2017.
“My biggest frustration with this government is that for years they sold themself as the solution to all of Ghana’s problems- but see,” she wrote.
Acknowledging the administration has had some policies, she added: “But you didn’t promise us average, you promised EXCEPTIONAL?!! So what happened?”
