Kojo Oppong Nkrumah: Minister says it will take time for Economy to Bounce back

- Minister of Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has said that the government will need time to bring the economy back on track

- He said the country's economy was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic

- His statement is coming at a time some Ghanaians have started the #fixthecountry campaign against the government

Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has said that it will take time for the government to fully bring the economy back on track.

He said Ghana’s economy was attacked by the COVID-19 pandemic and it will take a while for it to heal again.

The minister was reportedly speaking with media people in Wa, where he also stated that the government cannot shoulder all the responsibilities alone and needs help from the citizenry.

For this reason, the minister said it was in the right place for the government to introduce one or two taxes to help generate revenue.

"For example, the government has to raise lots of revenue to deal with most challenges of our time. We have got to a point where we cannot continuously borrow beyond where we are. So we have to raise some revenues, that means that we have to impose one, two or three taxes,” he stated

According to him, the country has reached a point where borrowing is not an option.

”Even if it takes a while we have a collective responsibility. The government cannot do this alone. What is your role, what is my role, how do we each play our role to ensure that we achieve it?" he explained.

Meanwhile, the #fixthecountry campaign started after the increment in fuel prices.

Following this, the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) was forced to reduce the increment by 8 pesewas.
