Konongo Odumase About To Cave In Due To "Galamsey"
Residents of Konongo Odumase in the Ashanti Region are turning their homes into mining pits, a reported development which is feared could see the entire municipality caving in soon.
Reports indicate residents have all resorted to illegal mining also known as Galamsey at the area as they avidly search for raw gold or other precious minerals in spite of consistent warnings by leaders of the community against the act.
Opinion Leader in an interaction with Starr FM in Accra has expressed concern over what has been seen to be the norm of most residents there. According to Nana Asante, “In fact it is very disturbing. One day it might cave in and nobody knows what will happen. We have been advising them to stop mining in the houses because that is dangerous. You tell them during the day. In the night you can't go there because you are not secured. We are not secured at all.”
Demographic computations made on the community shows 5 out of 7 residents are directing their efforts towards illegal mining with their houses set as pits - a revelation the Opinion Leader, Nana Asante says can largely be due to the lack of supervision by security agencies inn the area.
Meanwhile, Deputy Minister of Lands and Natural Resources,Kwabena Mintah Akandor, has demanded the arrest of all residents who are caught indulging in the illegal act.
