Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Charlotte Osei says there is no perfect voters register anywhere in the world.
“Is it still possible to have multiple registration? She rhetorically ask. Yes it is possible, she answers. This is because the system is over 98% efficient but still not perfect.”
Addressing some of the allegations and concerns raised by the opposition New patriotic Party (NPP) on the current voters register, the EC chairperson said "We cannot use an emotive definition and say this one is a Ghanaian and this one is not a Ghanaian".
According to her one of key reason why we have so many people on the voters register is because the voter id card is a main identification card in the country hence a driving point for people to go and get an id card; that is why we have so many people on our voters register.
Madam Osei further stressed that the register is not static. It is constantly been updated. “About 158,000 multiple names have been deleted in collaboration with political parties.”
She noted that minors are lured by political parties, dishonest parents who are lured by political parties. Some parents also just don't know the age of their children.
She opined that, so far as she was concerned there are no minors on the register.
Tracing the history of electoral reforms from 1992 when there were no photos on electoral I.D, the EC boss stated that the time frame will not allow the EC to compile and audit the new voters register to give it the credibility required.
“The EC by itself cannot ensure that there is a credible register; it will take a comprehensive effort from all Ghanaians and by cooperation we will require that everybody comes on board in ensuring that this particular system works the way it works,” she said.
