Armed robbers believed to be of Fulani extraction last Friday attacked and killed three persons on the Mampong-Kofiase road in the Ashanti Region.
Two persons were shot by the suspected robbers, and the other was run over by a vehicle that failed to heed a signal by the robbers to do so.
The deceased have been identified by the Ashanti Regional police as Kwabena Yeboah, 17, who was riding a motorbike and was sprayed with bullets by the robbers; Evans Anane, 13, who was shot in the forehead for shouting to call his mother, and Abena Anima, 49, who was run over by the taxicab.
So far three of the suspected armed robbers have been arrested by the Mampong Police and are currently in their custody.
They are Bayor Aberite, 33; Azuzie Mensoma, 22 and Gmituo Botere, 24.
The Ashanti Regional Police Public Affairs Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Yussif Tanko, while briefing the Daily Graphic said the incident occurred at about 6:15 p.m. last Friday on the Mampong-Kofiase road when a gang of five hood-wearing armed robbers blocked the road and robbed a number of passengers of their belongings.
He said the gang stopped a Toyota Hiace bus and lined up the occupants to block the road. Moments later, a taxicab pulled up but the driver did not heed the robbers’ signal for him to stop and thereby running over some of the passengers who were lying on the road, leading to the death of Abena.
ASP Tanko said the Mampong Highway Patrol team, which was on its usual rounds, appeared on the scene but the robbers opened fire on them, hitting the shoulder of Inspector Francis Ahadzie whilst trying to escape.
According to him, the robbers managed to escape arrest initially but three of them were arrested last Saturday when the police descended on them following a tip-off that they were hiding at Nkwanta, a town near Mampong.
The police retrieved cartridges, similar police uniforms and a photograph of one of the suspects wearing a camouflage and holding an AK47 when their room was searched.
The police are yet to retrieve the AK47 used in the operation.
