Prospective Senior High School Students are being refused admissions by some Senior High Schools in the Upper East Region for not having National Health Insurance (NHIS) cards.
Checks indiccate that some of these schools, Saint John’s Integrated, Zemsi and Navrongo Senior High School have left students highly stranded as they are being forced to obtain the said cards at the Bolgatanga Municipal Health Insurance office before they gain admissions to the school.
Another student affected by the directive narrates all efforts to get registered for the NHIS card has proven futile.
The Ghana Education Service, responding to the strange development says it strongly condemns the practice as Public Relations Officer of GES, Rev. Jonathan Bettey, argues that although the NHIS card is a requirement for every SHS student, students ought not to be sent back home for not having it. He says the schools are to put in place proper arrangements to enable the students acquire the card without the process affecting their education or academic work.
