Police Block Attempts By Two Families To Settle Defilement Case Out Of Court

A 27-year-old carpenter, Eric Quarshie is in the grips of the police for allegedly defiling a 14-year-old girl at Anyaa, a suburb of Accra in the GA-South Municipality.

Quarshie was busted after failing to take care of the victim and her baby. The 27 -year -old had a sexual relationship with the 14 year- girl for almost a year; the girl got pregnant and delivered a baby girl on the 7th June, 2015.

Despite both families reaching a consensus to have the Quarshie take care of the baby and help the 14- year -old further her education, Eric Quashie has failed to honour his part of the agreement.

Coupled with hardship and her inability to continually take care of the baby, the 14 –year- old on Friday 30th October, 2015 walked into the Anyaa Police Station to report the man and pleaded with officers to “let the man sign a bond of good behavior”.

However, the girl did not realize that her sexual encounter with the man constituted defilement, which is a criminal offense punishable by summary conviction to imprisonment for a term of not less than seven years and not more than twenty-five years.

Speaking in an interview with Atinka FM’s Regina Asamoah, rwho is in charge of the case, explained that the police are handling the case as a defilement case and not a domestic issue.

According to her, the police will still pursue the case despite the girl’s wish to get the man sign a bond of good behavior and set free to take care of the baby.

She however made a passionate appeal to all well-meaning citizens to come to the aid of the 14-year-old in taking care of the girl and her six-month-old baby.
