Reports from residents of Esreso at Kumasi in the Ashanti Region indicate they have been enjoying 'free' electricity for over two years now.
According to Ultimate FM in the Ashanti Region, the said residents have thus not paid a dime to the Electricity Company of Ghana - a development which has caused the residents there to draw the attention of officials of the ECG.
Thinking the response from the ECG would be that of worry and instant intervention to collect the compounded debts by these residents, disturbing news rather indicates officials of ECG have shown less concern as they have revealed the metres used in the said area are not in the records of the ECG hence the inability of they the authorities to charge them for the use of electricity.
According to the report, the residents have persistently pushed the debt-riddled ECG to rectify the anomaly since they have been enjoying power for free, but their pleas have fallen on deaf ears. They said they are willing to pay for the power, but the power distributor has shown disinterest.
The development raises much eyebrows as concerned citizens and energy experts argue the debt-ridden ECG is doing less work to address the huge debt deficits in the company. Meanwhile, there is yet to be an official statement from the Electricity Company of Ghana over the development.
