WC Qualifiers: African Giants Ghana, Algeria And Others Make Strides

Eighteen of the top-twenty ranked African national teams took giant strides as they found their way to the final knock out phase of the 2018 World Cup qualifiers.

The Black Stars advanced along with other African teams including Algeria who banged in as many as seven goals past a hapless Tanzanian side who had held them 2-2 in Dar es Salaam.

African champions Ivory Coast, Ghana, Senegal, Tunisia, Cameroon, Nigeria, Zambia, South Africa and Morocco are all through to the 20-nation group stage, that starts 11 months from now.

The others include Cape Verde, Congo Brazzaville, Guinea, Democratic Republic of Congo, Mali, Uganda, Gabon, Burkina Faso and Libya.

The only casualties were two seeded sides in the 20 home-and-away second round ties, Equatorial Guinea and Rwanda, who failed to make the cut as they lost overall to Morocco and Libya.

Algeria scored through Yacine Brahimi, Riyad Mahrez, Carl Medjani, Faouzi Ghoulam and Sporting Lisbon striker Islam Slimani bagged two goals each in an Algerian riot in Blida.

Egypt also trounced Chad 4-0 with goals through Mohamed Elneny and Abdallah El Saied as Ahmed Hassan added a brace in emphatic win before a 25 000 restricted  crowd at the Borg El Arab Stadium near Alexandria because of security reasons.

Nigeria needed a Moses Simon and Efe Ambrose goals to advance past a 10-man Swaziland after missing some numerous scoring opportunities as they brushed them aside 2-0 in Port Harcourt. The first leg had ended 0-0.

Ghana went through via goals from Mubarak Wakaso after 17 minutes and Jordan Ayew 85 minutes to give the Black Stars a 2-0 victory over Comoros in Kumasi after the first leg had ended goalless.

Ivory Coast sealed a 3-0 victory over Liberia with goals coming from a Giovanni Sio brace and Jean Michael Seri strike in Abidjan coming from a 1-0 win on Saturday over their opponents in Liberia.

With a 1-0 advantage from the first leg, Kenya fell 2-0 to Cape Verde in Praia as Heldon Ramos scored twice against the Harambee Stars.

Gabon edged Mozambique 4 -3 on penalties after extra time score stood 1-0 in favour of Gabon but the first leg also ended 1-0 for Mozambique which needed the penalty shootouts.
