Ghana, Nigeria Ranked Countries With Worst Cholera Cases In West Africa

The United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) has placed Ghana second in its 2014 cholera ranking in West Africa citing the government having to battle with about 28,944 cholera cases with 247 deaths as compared to Nigeria which led with the worst of 35,946 cases and 755 deaths.

The poor performance by both countries has raised much concerns as UNICEF reveals the high rates of cholera cases in Ghana, especially thwarts the very achievements made in Millennium Development Goals which further aims at ensuring the welfare of children in Africa.

Meanwhile in June 2015, the Ghana Health Service issued a cholera health alert following the constant rains and flooding in parts of the Greater Accra region. Eighteen (18) cases with no death reported in Greater Accra Region as compared to 25 cases with one reported death thus culminating to a case fatality rate (CFR) of 0.9% as of 21 June 2015.
