Read the full interview below:
What was your first sporting memory? I always remember Mike Tyson boxing. Staying up with my dad watching it when I was young – staying up all hours to watch it.
Who would play you in a film of your life? I don’t know… Matt Damon.
Favourite goal you’ve scored? Probably my over-head kick against Man City.
You can watch only three sports for the rest of your life – what are they? Golf, football and boxing.
Who is the most talented athlete that you’ve ever played with or against? Probably Cristiano. He’s a great athlete.
Favourite athlete who’s not a footballer? Michael Johnson.
What TV show are you currently watching? The Walking Dead.
What’s the last band you listened to? I’m trying to think… Actually today in the dressing room I was listening to Tina Turner.
Is that normal? No. Ashley [Young] normally does the music, but sometimes it’s more me and Bastian [Schweinsteiger]. We want to enjoy something different, so we put on Tina Turner. We enjoyed it anyway.
Have you ever been starstruck? Probably the first time I met Bastian [who is sitting nearby]. When he booted my ankle and injured me…
Who would be the worst teammate to be stuck in a lift with? Anders Lindegaard [now at West Brom]. He’s just annoying.
Strangest fan request you’ve ever had? I had one fan who had no hair and he asked me to sign his head.
Do you think he got it tattooed on after? Oh, I don’t know! I hope not because it wasn’t a very good signature. That was quite strange.
What’s your favourite travel destination? Barbados. I love it. It’s very relaxing and it’s a place for me to get away and chill out.
If you could have one superpower, what would you choose? To be invisible.
Who was your favourite cartoon character when you were growing up? Johnny Bravo.
What’s the biggest obstacle you’ve had to overcome in your career? Probably getting sent off for England [against Portugal] in the World Cup quarter final. That was quite tough.
Best advice you’ve ever been given? In terms of football, to just enjoy it. When you’re young and you’ve had a lot of coaching, it’s difficult – so just enjoy it.
What has been the highlight of your career so far? Winning the Champions League was a great feeling. Hopefully I’ll get the chance to feel that again.
