The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in collaboration with the Police have arrested 40 customers in Kumasi for stealing electricity [power].
They were arrested during an exercise organised by the ECG to clamp down on illegal connections.
The customers were arrested for self-reconnecting the power, after power supply had earlier been disconnected for non-payment of bills.
The exercise was carried out in Suame, Danyame and Abuakwa district areas of the ECG. Some of the power thieves were arrested at Kokoben, Atonsu Monaco, Asafo, Asuoyeboah, Dompoase and Ohwimase.

The Ashanti Regional Communications Manager of ECG, Mr Erasmus Kyere Baidoo, said customers in the region owed the company more than GH¢100 million.
According to him, the company was taking stringent measures to retrieve all the debt owed it by consumers.
He further noted that the company was resolved to ensure that those caught in the act of illegal power connection faced the full rigours of the law.
Ghana is undergoing an ELECTRICITY CRISIS, popularly known as “DUMSOR”, which is having a monumentally bad effect on people, industries and the country’s economy in general.
