Suspend And Postpone Utility Tariff Hikes To 2016 - TUC Charges PURC

The Trades Union Congress, (TUC) has charged the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) to suspend and postpone moves to the  recent hikes in utility tariff until next year, 2016.

In a statement signed by the General Secretary of the TUC, Kofi Asamoah, the Congress further argues that Ghanaian workers will be fit to handle utility hikes once they are economically stable - so that the PURC should desist from going beyond a 50 percent hike.

The Public Utility and Regulatory Commission (PURC) increased electricity and water tariffs by over 60 percent effective December 14th following a nationwide public consultation for the adjustment of utility tariffs.

In the announcement made to that effect, the PURC revealed that electricity will be increased by 59.2 percent while water by about 67.2 percent.
