TUC Enters Crunch Meeting With PURC Over Utility Tariff Hikes

The Trade Union Congress (TUC) is in a crunch meeting with officials of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) over the increment in utility prices which takes effect today, December 14 as Deputy Secretary of the TUC, Dr. Yaw Baah reveals the motive behind the meeting is to pressurize the PURC to reduce the tariffs.

The Public Utility and Regulatory Commission (PURC) has increased electricity and water tariffs by over 60 percent effective December 14th following a nationwide public consultation for the adjustment of utility tariffs. In an earlier announcement made, the PURC revealed that electricity will be increased by 59.2 percent while water by about 67.2 percent as the Director of Public Affairs of the PURC, Nana Yaa Jantuah explains the reasons for the increment is to enhance consumer interest, investor interest, economic development of the country, generation mix, and availability of the service among others .

Meanwhile, the crunch meeting between the TUC and PURC - should enter a stalemate is expected to ignite major demonstrations and strikes by workers nationwide as the increment has severely been rejected and condemned to be insensitive and less though out.
