Over 4000 Ghanaians Illegally Migrate To Italy In 2015

The International Organization of Migration (IOM) has revealed that more than 4,000 Ghanaians illegally traveled by boat to Italy between January and December 2015 in search of greener pastures -  a development which ranks Ghana first among ten other African countries to have citizens illegally migrate to Europe on a yearly basis.

Addressing the issue of Ghana's irregular migration, Chief of Mission of the International Organisation of Migration in Ghana, Sylvia Lopez Ekra expressed worry over the rising trend of illegal Ghanaian immigration stating citing the high figures were quite high and indicated that most of them did not reach their destinations but ended up dead on either the desert or in the Mediterranean Sea.

The reports follows troubling records of illegal migration by Ghanaians especially between January and April 2015 where it was reported that 471 Ghanaians including 32 unaccompanied minors were rescued from boats in the Mediterranean Sea by Italian authorities. It was also reported that about 200 Ghanaians died in Libya from January to the first week on June in 2003 in their attempt to cross the 3,000km Libyan Desert to Europe in search of greener pastures.
